Closing the Diaper Gap in Washington County.

PDX Diaper Bank and DHS (Beaverton/Hillsboro/Tigard) are partnering for a geographic-specific campaign to address diaper need in Washington County.

We are currently seeking support from the business community for sponsorship of outreach projects to support Washington County families in need.

Support the Campaign

What We Can Accomplish With Your Support:

  • The development of sustainable partnerships in order to open diaper pantries in Washington County.
  • Provide no-cost diapers to families residing in Washington County.
  • Provide diapering supplies monthly to organization(s) in Washington County (social workers report frequently purchasing diapers for families with their own money!)
  • Secure large, bulk diaper purchases which means lower costs per diaper for our programs (and more families served!).

According to the National Diaper Bank Network (2023), 1 in 2 U.S. families (47%) are negatively impacted by diaper need, and our country’s poorest families spend up to 14% of their annual income on diapers alone.

Why Diapers Matter

  • Currently, Washington County families are waiting weeks for the diapering supplies they need and/or receiving such a limited supply they they are  traveling to organizations in neighboring counties to access diapering essentials.
  • Access to clean diapers means happier and healthier children, families, and communities.
  • Without diapers, families can’t access early childhood education. Without childcare, parents can’t go to work or school. 60% of parents struggling with diaper need report missing an average of four days of work or school each month
  • One in two U.S. parents struggle to afford diapers, and government safety net programs such as SNAP and WIC do not support diaper-related expenses.
  • Caregivers are forced to excessively delay diaper changes, scrape and re-use soiled diapers, or utilize items such as plastic bags and paper towels. Ongoing exposure to soiled diapers leads to adverse health issues potentially requiring a doctor’s care.
  • The cost of a sufficient supply of diapers averages $80-$100 monthly, which creates an unneeded barrier for parents even when child care is subsidized.  forced to make choices between diapers and other household necessities such as food, medication, and transportation.
  • Diaper need deeply affects parents. Studies show that 73% of caregivers feel that they are not being good parents when their children are left too long in a dirty diapers, and maternal depression increases by up to 30% when diaper need is present.

Getting Relief for Families Now

PDX Diaper Bank is in need of additional support in order to address the high levels of diaper need in Washington County. Sustainable diapering support is always the long-term goal, but due to the extreme diaper need that exists countywide, we are working hard to get relief to families NOW through various outreach projects.

Thank you, Nikon, for sponsoring this outreach project!
